"Mental Monsters" started out as a 12-part art series where I would spend one month creating a piece for 12 consecutive months. Each month, I would focus on a specific mental disorder, and try to personify the mental disorder to help those experiencing them to remember that they are not defined by their disorder, and to know that there was someone out there that understood what was going through their mind. I also wanted to use this art series as a way to also help raise awareness for many mental disorders in a way that was captivating and hard to look away from.
Each month took a lot of thinking, and many months I would consult with someone whom had been diagnosed with the disorder I was focusing on for the month, asking them what their mental disorder would look like if it were a monster. I would research each mental disorder, gathering information from credible sources, to not only be able to understand the mental disorder to the best of my ability, but to also be able to put myself in the minds of others in order to personify the mental disorder as a monster.
Since the finishing of the 12-part series, the feedback has been an explosion of incredible feedback. Galleries, fellow artists, and art admirers from the local areas have fallen in love with my monsters, and have encouraged me to continue creating monsters. After having considered this for a while, and realizing how much of an impact all of these monsters have had, I decided to continue going with the art series, continuing to create monsters for those who love them.
